The Tiling Begins and the first ever GIVEAWAY!

Guess what we started over the weekend! :)

Yes, the tiling has begun, which means we are another step closer to having a finished kitchen!

I woke up Saturday morning to find that Vern had already made a trip to Home Depot to pick up tiling supplies and had maneuvered different versions of subway tile against the wall for comparison.  Originally we thought of going with individual subway tiles, but instead we chose to go with the smaller grouped tiles.

Friday Updates - The Ceiling is Down!

I know, I know - I promised updates and then two plus weeks went by with nothing. NOTHING. I'm sorry.

Really.

I'd like to give you a good excuse, but I really don't have one.  So my apology will have to suffice.

With the counters installed we began the daunting work of re-texturing the ceiling.

They're HERE!

The counters have been installed!

Although it's been about a month since we ordered them, it feels like this whole process had gone by rather quickly.  We only lived without counters or a sink for a few days, which sucked, but it could have been worse.  I still managed to make a lasagna without them, so high five for me.

There isn't a whole lot of description for this post.  The subcontractors pretty much did everything.   By the time I got home yesterday evening, the counters were on and they were finishing up the seams. Luckily, Vern knows the drill and snapped some pictures of the whole process.

When we left the kitchen last time it looked like this:

Goodbye Trash Compactor

Ladies and Gentleman! The trash compactor has left the building!

Well actually, it's sitting on the corner of our street with a "Free! It Works!" sign on it, but it has officially left our house! If I danced this would be the part where I do I little happy dance, but I don't dance - so you'll just have to use your imagination.

The new counters are being installed on Monday, which means we have to get the kitchen fully ready for that phase of the remodel.  All the old counters need to be removed and the existing cabinets need to be prepped and ready for the install.

Five New Things

This isn't a real "in-depth" post, but I figured I should probably try to keep my momentum of posting at least once a week.  We don't want to go through another "Tawnya doesn't post for an entire year" fiasco again.

So here are five new things for this week.

1.  School started again.  Yes, I'm back in that saddle.  Another round of classes has begun and even though I was able to start them two days early, I'm still feeling the stress that comes along with a new quarter.  So please be patient with me.  I'll try to keep the postings coming as house things happen, but it might be difficult as I adjust to another quarter of "I have no life".  Work and school full time are tough to manage, but once I get through the first few weeks and have a routine down all should return to normal.

2. Art for the Dining Room.  I was able to get one of the blank pieces of canvas covered with something last week.  Whoo hoo! Inspiration came from the inverted arrow art Dana with House Tweaking has for her master bedroom (here), so I created my own miniature version using painters tape and gold leaf.  I know, I know...last time I used gold leaf it was a disaster, but this project was pretty simple and I just vacuumed up the mess when I was done.  It's one of my favorite pieces in the house thus far. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the process, but if you want to make your own, just draw it out, tape off sections you don't want gold and then leaf away.

Easy Front Door Decor

A serious eye-sore for our outdoor decor has been the front door.  Actually who am I kidding, the entire outside area (aside from some hanging baskets and flowers) is an eye-sore.

We moved in this last April and since then this is what has been hanging on our front door:

Cha Cha Cha Changes!

I would first like to start off by saying that coming up with a clever blog post title is one of the hardest parts about starting off a post.  I know, my life is rough, but seriously.  So I apologize in advance for any cheesy blog titles.  Please bear with me. :)

I mentioned that over Labor Day weekend we did some (somewhat) major updating in the dining room.  No, I still haven't removed the popcorn ceiling, that task is something I am dreading.  The dining room however looks nothing like it did before.

Let's begin.

The last time the dining room was discussed, it looked like this:

Curtain Queen

The dining room got some major (unexpected) updating over Labor Day weekend.

There was something about the room that I just didn't like.  Even with the addition of the big chalkboard, it just felt...wrong.

The best part about interior design is watching a room evolve over time, at least that's the best part for me.  One thing you can be certain about in our house is that NOTHING has a permanent place.  Vern is constantly whining that once he gets where things go figured out, I pull a change-up on him and he's back to not knowing where anything goes.  Boo hoo.

Maybe it's the completion of the cabinets (finally), but it's starting to feel like areas of our house are coming together.  The dining room being one of those rooms - I'm getting ahead of myself though.

Rewind

Labor Day weekend had me perplexed over what to do/add/remove from the dining room.  I took a quick trip to Hobby Lobby as I waited for the cabinets to dry and stumbled upon this fabric.

Inspiration struck and snatched up 7 yards.  It was time for some curtain making. :)

Friday Special - Projects I Suck At (Gold Edition)

Like I said before, over Labor Day weekend we got a lot of projects crossed off the list.  It felt good.  In fact, it felt so good that I think I might have become a little over confident in my abilities.

We made a lot of changes to the dining room and the amazing result (which I will share next week) left me wanting to create a new centerpiece for the table.  Can you see where this is going?

One of the latest trends for home decor is gold.  Seriously, gold is making a huge comeback.  Fixtures, decor, hardware, you name it and it probably looks better in gold.

I've been seeing a lot of Pinterest projects with gold leafing and thought to myself, "How hard could this be?" I'm pretty crafty.  It's pretty much like paper maché right?

No.

No it is not like paper maché.

Not even close.

Seriously...NOT PAPER MACHE.

Kitchen Progress!

A few weeks (or months) ago our kitchen looked like this:

The laundry list of things to do was long and daunting, but I am proud to say that after the long holiday weekend our kitchen currently looks like this:

Friday Special - Projects WE Suck At

Happy Friday!

For some reason, this week has been dragging on at the pace of a snail.  I am definitely ready for the three-day weekend.

So, to celebrate, I thought I would entertain you with another addition of "Projects I Suck At"; however, this particular project does not involved me individually - it involves the Permanent Roommate as well. :)

I present to you...

...our backyard.

The Cabinet Battle Rages On

My plan to finish the cabinets over this last weekend was thwarted by the simple fact that I forgot HOW LONG IT TAKES TO PAINT CABINETS!

It takes forever and even that is an understatement.

It probably would have been helpful if I would have just done them all at once, but thinking ahead has never been a strong point of mine.

Here's an update of what was accomplished over the weekend, sorry in advance for the bad IPhone pictures.  My fancy camera still isn't working and my focus wasn't on getting good pictures.  It was on finishing the stupid cabinets.

The kitchen has remained pretty much untouched for the better part of the last few months.  I successfully painted 50% of the bottom cabinets, and that was it.  As you can see from the below picture, a drawer front was only primed, the drawer fronts for under the sink are missing and not pictured...the backs of most of the doors weren't even primed.

Friday night I came home from work determined to get moving on this stagnant task.

I removed all the doors and drawer fronts that needed paint and set to work.

Reviewing Our Ikea Kivik Sectional After (almost) Two Years

When the man-friend and I first moved into the duplex we had a lot of boxes and pretty much no furniture.  Well, that's not true.  We had a coffee table, a desk and Vern's hideous black Lazy Boy recliner.

Somehow, that stupid recliner has wound up in my living room again, but that is a battle I am willing to fight later.

Vacation Weekend!

Since my last post, we haven't made any sort of progress on any sort of project around the house.  Well, that's not entirely true - we did install a new high-tech door lock, but I'll get to that in a later post.  This post is just a re-cap of our awesome mini-vacation to the big city and the beach because I'm sore from the gym and don't want to get up to take pictures of house-related stuff.  :) So enjoy.

A few months ago Vern discovered that the musical "The Book of Mormon" was coming to Seattle.  I never thought that the word "musical" and Vern would go hand-in-hand, but considering this is a musical from the creators of South Park I should have known better.  We bought tickets for a Thursday evening and decided to make it a super fancy date night since we don't get many of those.  Coincidentally, Vern's family were planning on a weekend at the beach the same weekend, so I took the rest of the week off and we planned a mini-vacation with Sam (the Thundercats had to stay home - much to my dismay).

Friday Special: Projects I Suck At

The biggest pet peeve Vern has with me is my inability to finish one project before I start another one.  It drives him absolutely insane.  He is a very focused individual when it comes to tasks or projects.  When he sets his mind to something he sticks with it until it is done and until it is done right.

Me?

Ehhhhhhhhhhh.....

Not so much.

Right now, I can count at least six different house/art projects that I have "in process".  I like to tell Vern that my creative process is to have multiple things going at the same time, that it helps me visualize the project as a whole better.  That's bullshit.  Really I just get bored and find something different to entertain me until I feel like doing the first project again.  Perfect example....our kitchen.

I swore after I painted the cabinets at the duplex that I would never, EVER, paint cabinets again.  Fast forward to a year later and I'm staring at this:

Chalkboard Done!

Four episodes of Game of Thrones, five pieces of chalk, one chalk pen and a very cramped hand is all it took to take this:

Dining Room Art

Today's update isn't very exciting, but it's an update at least.  Vern came home from Alaska and infected me with two different forms of illness, which have created a pretty miserable and pathetic vibe in our household, all we've really done is geek out and watch three straight seasons of Game of Thrones (I'm obsessed with Khaleesi). However, yesterday I was feeling well enough to begin embarking on the task of fixing the dining room art dilemma.

When we lived in the duplex, the large "eat" sign worked for the our small dining room.  It honestly was a spur of the moment project.  At the time, I didn't want to stare at a blank wall, but didn't want to spend money on anything either.  Naturally, I went salvaging in the garage and found a piece of plywood, slapped some stain on it, created a stencil, slapped some paint over that and called it good.  The sign stayed above our little dining room area until we moved.

Friday Special - Projects I Suck At

More often then I would ever like to admit, I begin a project that just doesn't work out.  Actually, it more than "just doesn't work out".  It is a complete failure. I might start making this a weekly post, it seriously happens that often!

Anyone who knows me knows that these minor setbacks don't usually get under my skin.  I typically just abandon said project and find something that works, which drives Vern crazy.  I figured it would be good to share my most recent failure as an example to the cold hard truth that not everything works out as planned.

After the completion of the new table and having a somewhat functional dining room, I turned my attention to the decor, which we are seriously lacking.  Bare walls drive me absolutely insane and none of the artwork from the previous house seem to go well with our new layout. I seemingly hate everything from the old house and feel like I can't get the decorating decisions right.

"Tawnya" the Builder

When we moved to our new house we decided to leave the built in seating and dining room table at the duplex.  The man-friend built both of those specifically for that particular area and since our new dining room was significantly larger, we didn't think it was worth the trouble to disassemble/move everything when it wouldn't fit.

Long Overdue

Hey!

Remember that time I started a blog and then right in the middle of a huge project I just stopped posting updates and then over an entire year went by without me posting anything again.....yeah....that happened.

I would love to have a wonderful excuse like I was out traveling the world and having these great adventures, but that would be a giant lie.  Well, actually I did take a trip to Yellowstone, Glacier and Maui...but still. In all reality we just got extremely busy. Not only did I start a challenging Bachelor's Degree program at Central Washington University, but my position was also somewhat upgraded at work - leaving me almost no free time.

Now that school is over with for the summer, I don't know what to do with myself.  Naturally, I turn to the blog. :)

Picking up where I left off...
