Easy Front Door Decor

A serious eye-sore for our outdoor decor has been the front door.  Actually who am I kidding, the entire outside area (aside from some hanging baskets and flowers) is an eye-sore.

We moved in this last April and since then this is what has been hanging on our front door:

I don't remember how I acquired this wreath...or what I was thinking when I hung it up.  I'm assuming that I came across it while unpacking and figured it was easier to just hang up rather than find a suitable place to store it.  So yeah, we were those people for the last six months...the people who have semi-Christmas decor hanging up in the middle of the summer.  Le sigh.

As much as I pride myself on the evolving interior decor, you would think it would be the same for the exterior.  Not. So. Much.  You saw the pictures of our yard...it's literally just dirt.

After staring at the ugly wreath every time I walked through the door, I finally had enough and decided IT MUST GO!

During one of my many trips to Hobby Lobby, I picked up another wood round kind of like the one I used here, but smaller in depth/bark portion.

The entire project cost me less than $10.  The chalkboard paint I already owned.  And I used a 40% off coupon for the wood round.

I've been seeing a lot of wood round chalkboards on Etsy and figured I could easily just make one myself.  So that is exactly what I did.

I wanted some of the natural wood to show along the edge, so I drew a border with a pencil and then set about painting the inside with my chalk paint.

It took a few coats of the paint to get a good layer down and after letting it dry overnight, it was ready for seasoning.

Again, seasoning is just  rubbing a piece of chalk all over the chalkboard surface and then wiping it off.  This ensures that anytime you write something on the chalkboard it won't leave a faint trace of it behind when you wipe it off.

I couldn't think of anything clever to say, so I just stuck with your basic "Welcome", which is kind of odd because if you know Vern and I, you know that we don't usually "welcome" random people to our house.  You must be invited or we get cranky.  So I guess it's really a sign for those invited.

I should probably add a disclaimer to the bottom of it now that I think about it....

Moving on...

A quick outline...

...and then it was just a matter of filling in the lines with my chalk pen and then going over it one more time with a piece of chalk. This is always my typical "go-to" method for chalkboards.  I either outline with the chalk pen and then fill in with actual chalk, or I outline and fill in with chalk pen and then go over it with real chalk.  The chalk pen provides more durability and I've found that if I do it right I don't need to use a sealant.

I had grabbed some of these screw eyes as well...

...which just twisted into the back of the round and then I used some string from my secret closet to finish it off.

Much better than the wreath.

The door is still ugly and hopefully will go soon. I have a birthday coming up...so Mom, if you're reading this....hint, hint. :)

But I'm pretty happy with our cute little sign and love that I can change it throughout the seasons without having to buy something completely new.

Still need to add that disclaimer though...
